Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine which training modality had the greater transference to sprinting performance and which yielded the greatest improvements in sprinting performance of the Team Sport Athletes, the Locomotor Resistance training or the Fixed Plane Resistance training. This study also sought to determine if a duration of 4 weeks was sufficient to produce improvements in sprinting performance of Team Sport Athletes using the Locomotor Resistance training or Fixed Plane Resistance training. A total of 24 Team Sport Athletes were recruited (age: M = 21.1, SD = 1.7 years old; weight: M = 63.8, SD = 8.9kg; height: M = 171.2, SD = 4.7cm). Subjects were required to complete 1 preliminary testing and 1 experimental intervention program depending on the allocation to either Fixed Plane or Locomotor Training and 1 post intervention testing. For the preliminary testing, subjects were required to perform 3 trials of the 20m Flying Start Test, each trial was separated by 2 minutes to allow for recovery. Then they were separated into their respective groups by way of the match pairing method and they underwent a 4 week training program. After the 4 weeks, a post intervention test was done with the same procedures as the preliminary testing. The data was analyzed by using Independent Sample t-test and Paired Sample t-test. Results showed that The Locomotor Training Group showed a significant improvement in Sprinting Performance while the Fixed Plane Training Group did not, (Locomotor Pre : M = 2.62, SD = 0.21s , Post: M = 2.57, SD = 0.19s ; p = 0.013); (Fixed Plane Pre : M = 2.64, SD = 0.16s , Post: M = 2.64, SD = 0.17s ; p = .678). However there were no significant differences in the scores of the two groups after the 4 weeks of training, (Locomotor : M = 2.57, SD = 0.19s , Fixed Planet: M = 2.64, SD = 0.17s ; p = 0.353). In conclusion, Locomotor Training may be able to increase speed over a duration of 4 weeks, however there is no evidence to support it being a more beneficial training modality as compared to Fixed Plane Training, More research must be done to determine the effects of different durations of training on sprinting performance.
