Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine the effects of plyometric training (PT), SAQ training (ST) and combination training (CT) on agility, speed, explosive power and emotional perception among adolescent Taekwondo athletes. The sample of this study comprised of 30 subjects (age = 12.40 ± 2.53 years old; years of experience = 2.13 ± 0.86 years, height = 1.47 ± 0.15m & weight = 45.00 ± 16.38 kg) and were equally divided into PT group, ST group and CT group of 10 randomly. All three experimental groups went through the pre-test and post-test, remained their normal training routines and underwent 8 weeks of training respectively. For the purpose of gathering data in this study, the subjects were tested on the Illinois agility test, 20 meter sprint test and Sargent jump test. The subjects were also tested on emotional perception by using Exercise Induced-Feeling Inventory (EFI) survey (Gauvin & Rejeski, 1993). The data was analysed and interpreted with SPSS version 23. In this study, the demographic information collected was age, gender, belt grade, height, weight and years of experience. In inferential statistics, one-way ANOVA revealed the comparison of pre-test mean score, post-test mean score and EFI mean scores among three groups and the data analysis showed no significant differences. Additionally, a paired sample test was performed to compare the pre and post mean scores within each of the three groups. The results showed significant difference in agility (p = .040) and explosive power (p = .001) in PT group whereas speed (p = .021) in ST group. This showed that plyometric training, SAQ training and combination training could develop agility, speed, and explosive power, but the current study shows that SAQ training is the most interesting among three types of training due to the highest mean score of EFI survey.
