Abstract
Sustainable construction is one way of ensuring sustainable development by the building and infrastructure sectors taking environmental, social and cultural issues into account. Since then, the construction industry has been identified as a major catalyst to achieve the status of Malaysia. It is one of the industries contributing to most pollutions in the world. Therefore, it is necessary for the industry to apply sustainable development practices to reduce the negative environmental impacts. Many developers have, however, focused heavily on market demand and economic factors, and have ignored the need to pay attention to environmental issues. Due to the higher costs incurred during activities, sustainability is considered an obstacle to achieving short-term economic targets. The role of contractors in Malaysia's construction industry is therefore very necessary for sustainable development. Nonetheless, contractor criteria for sustainability projects are rising. Therefore, in establishing development goals and objectives for initiatives they have traditionally been not called partners. In addition to opportunities to participate in sustainable development, recognizing the self-perceived position of the contractor is crucial to provide an analysis of its future role in the industry. Basically, Malaysia is still in its infancy as a result of sustainable development. In Malaysia, there are major obstacles to sustainable development due to the lack of knowledge, education and development, lack of effective procurement processes, existing public policy and regulatory frameworks. This paper presents the data analysis of contractor’s role and importance of sustainable development in Malaysia construction industry by using qualitative method. The objectives of this paper are to identify the international factors of sustainable development, to determine the significant of contractors in Malaysia construction industry and the recommends way to improve sustainable development in Malaysia construction industry. The researcher used semi structured and open-ended questionnaires to interview respondents who are construction team in Malaysia construction industry. The researcher interviewed the respondent by transcribed. The survey asked the construction team for their experiences and knowledges regarding the sustainable development in Malaysia construction industry. Respondents provide their feedback about importance of contractors, ways to improvement, factors and obstacles of sustainable development. The researcher collected the data from respondents and analyzed the data by using thematic analysis. Lastly, the findings and recommendations are presented.
