Abstract

A rising quality of life, and high rates of resource consumption patterns have had an unintended and negative impact on the urban environment. Generation of wastes far beyond the handling capacities of urban governments and agencies. With high volume of waste generated, cities are now facing problems of costs involved, the disposal technologies and methodologies, and the impact of wastes on the local and global environment. In order to study and understand waste generation and management, this research had been carried out to study about waste management within Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (TARUC). A case study was took part in one of the particular block in TARUC which is block M. The main objective of this research is to determine the sources of waste generation in a typical academic block in the campus and to characterise the wastes generated in a typical academic block in the campus as well as to study the current practices of handling wastes generated from the academic block in the campus. For this research, an interview with the person-in-charge of Department of Estate Management and cleaners were carried out in order to have a brief knowledge about how waste was managed. The case study was then carried out by collecting the waste, characterised them and to measure them. It is considered as an embedded single case study due to the selection of location for this research. To improve the reliability and the validity of the study, construct validity and internal validity test has been carried out. To prove the accuracy of the findings, sources of evidence have to be identified. In this case, documentation, interviews and also direct observation are used. Results found that there are only 4 categories of waste were found and the amount of waste was lesser than the other findings. This is due to the limitation of the location and also time. Therefore, future study may consider to cover a larger area in order to get a more detail and accurate result.
