Abstract

Construction industry is a booming industry and continuous growth all over the world. In Malaysian construction industry, there are large portion of labours and the development of construction industry will relies on construction labour productivity. Therefore, the provision of welfare facilities on construction site tends to reflect on productivity of works and satisfaction of labours. Due to shortage of construction skilled labours, it will forced the construction industry to employ unskilled foreign labours with inexperience, lack of education and first timer at construction sites. Besides, the safe and health problem is biggest challenge in Malaysian construction industry, poor welfare facilities can lead to the construction labour’s health and safety problem. Hence, a sufficient and well-maintained facilities can have a desirable advantage on health and wellbeing of construction labours. Construction labours on site need to drink water, a clean place for having meals, wash and clean their dirty hands, enter washroom and relax to recover from fatigue. All these basic welfare facilities are important as it can increase the labour’s output and maintain health of construction labour. The thrust of this research was to investigate the quality of welfare facilities provided in Malaysian construction site and at the same time to identify the awareness on minimum requirement and guidelines of welfare facilities. A questionnaire survey was distributed to the site management personnel through online and face-to-face delivery. The questionnaire survey received and responded by 54 respondents. Among the 54 respondents, the textual data was collected and converted into statistical data for statistical analysis process. The findings revealed the condition or state of overall welfare facilities on site are in neutral condition. Besides, the following result revealed that level of awareness on minimum requirement and guidelines of welfare facilities is relatively low, which in the gap of slightly aware to somewhat aware. Most of the site management personnel are not so familiar with all the minimum requirement and guidelines of welfare. Therefore, Government may instruct the officials visit the site, ensure compliance of welfare facilities and the construction labour given the benefits. The site management personnel shall create awareness about the requirement of welfare facilities and statutory rights among the construction labour on site.
