Abstract

Rapid growth of construction activities in Malaysia resulted in increasing of construction waste problems. Undeniably, huge amounts of construction waste will cause destructive effects on the environment if these wastes are not managed properly. To cope with this problem, waste reduction through Reduce, Reuse and Recycle (3R) practice has been encouraged in construction industry towards sustainable waste management. However, waste reduction through 3R is still at its infancy in construction industry in Malaysia. This research highlight the importance of 3R concept, the challenges in applying the 3R concept and the strategies for enhancing 3R concept in site waste management. Questionnaire survey and interview are used to obtain the data for analysis. 80 set of questionnaire are distributed to the targeted respondents within Klang Valley and a semi-structured interview is conducted with 4 interviewees which are project manager, site supervisors and subcontractors with at least 10 years of working experience in the construction industry and had practiced 3R concept site waste management previously. Data collected are analysed using descriptive analysis and content analysis to understand the challenge and strategies of 3R concept application in site waste management.
