Abstract

The achievement of women in different field in Malaysia is prevalent which they can compete with men in the construction industry. However, there are misconceptions that women are weak and incapable to be good leader or employees as compared to men. Women in the construction industry encounter obstacles such as sexual harassment, family/ work life balance, occupational stress and negative perceptions. The objectives of this research are to evaluate the challenges faced by women in construction industry, to identify the career success factors for women in construction industry, and to recommend strategies for improving career development of women in construction industry. In order to achieve the research objectives, literature review, questionnaire survey, SPSS Statistics software are used. Descriptive analysis is used to analyse the result from the questionnaire survey. The top three challenges, career success factors and strategies for improving women career development have been examined to provide comprehensive understanding in the construction industry. The result revealed the top three challenges faced by women in the construction industry are role conflict between family and work life, long working hours and sexual harassment. From the result, the top three career success factors are communication skill, time management and problem solving. This study also pointed out that equal training opportunities, gender equality company policy and enforcement of law are the top strategies for improving women career development in the industry. This research can help the construction industry to review the existing problems faced by women and develop effective ways to create a better working environment for women to work in the industry. This study also help women to understand the critical factor that help them to advance their career in construction industry.
