Abstract

Shortage of skilled workers in the construction industry in Malaysia is considered one of the most common and serious problems plaguing the Malaysia construction industry given the number and the value of the projects involved. It affects not only our country economic but also construction industry players including developer, contractor, consultant as well as general public. The research is focus on the shortage of construction skilled workers. First, the shortage of skilled workers in different trades in construction industry is studied. Then, the factors that causing shortage of skilled workers in the construction industry and the strategies to improve the participation of skilled workers in construction industry also reviewed and summarized into questionnaire survey. Total of 341 sets of questionnaire have sent out and 245 completed set of questionnaire were received. Discussion on the data collected included interpreting the underlying factors and suggestions from the results answered by the respondents. By analysing the data collected from respondents, in section 3 in the questionnaire survey, which asked about the shortage of skilled construction workers by trades. The respondents’ rate of worker shortage by trades, the rank 1 is carpenter, follow by barbender and bricklayer. Besides, the lowest 2 rank are sign maker and air conditioner installer. Moreover, the respondents’ level of difficulties experienced in finding of different construction, the rank 1 to 3 are same to the respondents’ rate of worker shortage by trades. Furthermore, the lowest 2 rank are sign maker and air conditioner installer. For the factors that cause shortage of construction skilled workers, the highest rank is poor working environment (3D) and poor image of construction industry. The lowest rank for factors that cause shortage of construction skilled workers is skilled worker’ salary is pocketed by his employer, therefore the skilled workers unwilling to work under this sub-contracting system and leave the field. Besides, the highest rank among the strategies to improve the participation of skilled workers is carry out safety practice and procedure. Moreover, the lowest 2 rank is giving allowance and overtime payment and raise of wages.
