Abstract

Building Information Modelling (BIM) is a reformed and advanced technology that is driven by the modern technological improvements in the construction industry, the Quantity Surveyors (QS) have seen the potential of further enhancing role and become more effective and productive in carrying out measurement and management oriented tasks. QS are still unclear about the capabilities of BIM in Quantity Surveying Practice and the benefits of BIM implement in Quantity Surveying Practice. One of the reasons for low adoption of BIM is lack of consciousness of the capabilities of BIM. Therefore, this research will be investigating on the roles of BIM in Quantity Surveying Practice, to determine the problems can be minimized by adopting BIM to Quantity Surveying Practice and identify the ways to increase the implementation level of BIM among QS. Moreover, the study also helps to identify how BIM impacts on the QS industry and QS job scopes. The research approach was carried out based on quantitative research. The questions in the questionnaire was set based on the literature review. The survey questionnaires were distributed in the construction industry within Klang Valley region. There are 120 sets of questionnaire have been collected from respondents. The data collected was analysed by using SPSS and descriptive statistics was created according to the type of questions. In addition, the result was analysed and presented in table tabulation, bar chart and pie chart for easier and clearer understanding. The findings from the data analysed was compared with the literature review based on the objectives of the study and the result prove that the QS industry do aware but have not implement BIM. Whereas, the capabilities which are most rated are easily updates cost plans with more detail as design is developed and design changes reflected consistently in all drawing views. In addition, the problem which is most rated is not standardized format of documentation. Furthermore, the strategies which is most rated is early understanding by top managerial in an organization on BIM. In conclusion, the findings successfully achieved the objectives at a satisfactory level. The study was recommended to identify the role of BIM in Quantity Surveying Practice (QSP) through some solid case studies, to develop a balance relationship in between Quantity Surveyor (QS) and BIM and to adopt both quantitative and qualitative research method to widen the scope of result in accepting new opinions.
