Abstract

Malaysian construction industry plays an important role as it generates prosperity to the country and the development of economic. Demand on the manpower increases rapidly every year which leads shortage of workers happened. However, the irritating working conditions may lead the majority of local workers are not willing to take place on this sector. As the labour resources are important to ensure the project can be completed successfully, thus most of the construction companies will prefer to employ foreign workers as foreign worker does not have any requirement for their works. Therefore, Malaysian construction sector pull factor for foreign workers migration in Malaysia. The number of foreign workers has been increases years by years. This study aims to investigate how foreign workers affect Malaysian construction sector. Similar to this aim, this research study set three objectives which are to identify the procedures to employ foreign workers, to investigate the welfares provided to foreign workers and to determine the challenges faced by contractor in managing foreign workers. The study was carried out using questionnaires forms which contain selection of short and predetermined as well as Likert scale answers. The data was analysed using means and standard deviation. The results of the study show that most strongly agreed most of the foreign workers originated from Bangladesh and mainly employer employ foreign worker is they willing work under risky condition. Majority of the construction companies provide safety and health care welfare as the foreign workers will not able to afford high medical fees if welfares not provided. Most agreed that miscommunication, social problems and attitude of foreign workers are the challenges often arise due to the employment of foreign workers and the way to resolve it is to enhance the communication skill.
