Abstract

Equitable gender career development is important to all industry as gender diverse workplaces are more inclined to improve worker productivity and deliver better returns to the company’s bottom line. However, the numbers of women involvement in the Malaysian construction industry is lower compared to men and has not been extensively documented. The aim of this paper is to establish the factors causing low participation of women and to identify the challenges encountered by women in this sector as well as to determine strategies to overcome the inequality gender issue. Furthermore, 280 sets of questionnaire were distributed to women and men who working in the construction industry which is currently developing construction project such as Kuala Lumpur and were selected through simple random and snowball sampling method but only 62 questionnaires have been completed by the respondents. All data was analysed by using method of frequency distribution method and software Statistical Package for Social Science 23 (SPSS) to acquire mean, standard deviation and the difference perception between men and women. From the questionnaire, it found that female and male have different levels or agreement with all factors causing low involvement of women and challenges that encountered by women in construction sector. In conclusion, future research suggested can be done to enhance the involvement of women by encourage more young women to enter into this field and balanced the gender proportion in order to achieve the equitable gender career in the construction industry.
