Abstract

Construction industry plays an important roles in the economic growth of any nation and holds a significant position in the development plan of the country. As the economics improved, it contributes to the population growth which leads to greater densities and eventually increase the demand for property. As Kuala Lumpur is the most populous city where its land has become limited and expensive that developers as well as contractors have to build vertically which results in the prevalence of high-rise properties. Hence, the need for development of built environment has result in severe environmental impacts to the surrounding. Although construction industry constituted most of the economy and brings in benefit but it also brings adverse effects to the country. The activities of the construction industry have a significant environmental impact where it can occur at various stage in the construction if inadequate mitigation measures are taken. Therefore the adverse environmental impacts initiated by construction activities cannot be neglected. The rationale underlying this piece of research are to study the environmental impacts, identifying the perceptions of the construction parties on the impacts and suggesting the possible methods to minimise the impacts in constructing high-rise properties in Kuala Lumpur. The literature review of this research study is to obtain relevant information from the journal articles, books and different online sources to have better understanding about the environmental impacts. In order to carry out the research finding, a questionnaire survey through google form was administered to the respondents by emails. The questionnaire consists of multiple-choice and likert scale questions. Besides that, few open-ended question were prepared to explore the respondent’s ideas and suggestion on the environmental impacts. The respondents involved in the construction of high-rise properties in Kuala Lumpur were chosen to participate in the research and a total number of 364 sets of questionnaires were distributed. However, only 100 sets of questionnaires were successfully received and used in generating the analysis for data collection. The data collected was then analyzed in depth using Microsoft word and Microsoft Excel. These two programs were used to draw pie chart, bar graph, column chart and tabulation of data. Moreover, the mean value is calculated as well as the ranking is also included. The result revealed that almost all the parties are aware of the environmental impacts in constructing high-rise properties in Kuala Lumpur. In which, these construction parties also agree that such environmental impacts can be minimise by applying appropriate solution. The limitation of this research study also had been listed and there are some recommendations provided for further study in order to collect more detailed and accurate findings. In a nutshell, this research study plan to waken construction parties on the issue of environmental impacts in constructing high-rise properties in Kuala Lumpur. Every parties have their roles and responsibilities to minimise environmental impacts so as to create a comfortable and peace environment in surrounding environment of Kuala Lumpur.
