Abstract

Building Information Modelling (BIM) is a technology that is currently gaining momentum within the construction industry as interoperability issue is getting more important for the productivity and quality of the industry. BIM incorporated with a processes of producing, communicating and analysing the building models as well as helps in integrating the information throughout the project’s lifecycle. In Quantity Surveying practice, BIM provides various capabilities to help to improve the productivity and value of services of Quantity Surveyor. Despite there is bound of benefits gained from the BIM application, the adoption rate of BIM in Quantity Surveying practice is relatively stagnant and low as compared with other profession such as Architect and Engineer. Hence, this research aims to study the influence of BIM implementation towards Quantity Surveyor profession. In order to achieve the aim for this research study, the research objectives were established. The first research objective is to identify the capabilities of BIM in Quantity Surveying practice. The second objective is to determine the opportunities and challenges of BIM towards Quantity Surveyor profession. The third objective is to recommend the strategies to be adopted to encourage the use of BIM software in Quantity Surveying practice. In Chapter 1, it included the background of this dissertation, problem statement, scope of study, significance of study, research method overview as well as organisation of dissertation will be discussed at the end of chapter. In Chapter 2, general information of Quantity Surveyor and BIM system will be discussed in order to provide a basic knowledge before the in-depth discussion on BIM in Quantity Surveying practice. Then, a comprehensive literature review was conducted to examine the capabilities of BIM in Quantity Surveying practice. Subsequently, the impact of BIM implementation in Quantity Surveying practice in term of opportunities and challenges have been identified in this research. This research will also provide recommendation on the strategies to adopt BIM system in construction industry. Then, literature review provides a theoretical information attributing to the research objectives which serves to enhance and consolidate knowledge base is established. In Chapter 3, research methodology was established to describe the research approach, research process, data collection technique, development of research instruments, sampling method as well as data analysis method. The research was carried out based on quantitative research. Questionnaire was adopted to capture a broad perception of Quantity Surveyors at Klang Valley area. The data collected were analysed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) where frequency distribution, mean score, multiple response method and independent t-test were created to analyse the findings according to the type of questions. In conclusion, the findings were successfully achieved the objectives of this research paper at a satisfactory level and the understanding will be applied into the result of the finding.
