Abstract
The aim of this research is to study the electricity consumption in low-cost housing. The research objectives are: - (i) to investigate the practice of energy efficiency, (ii) to determine the usage pattern of cooling system, (iii) to analyse the contribution of cooling system to electricity consumption. The consumption of electricity in residential sector in Malaysia has increased year by years. There are some factors that are causing the increase of electricity consumption which are the usage of the cooling systems at home, the practice of energy efficiency, and the behaviour of using the cooling system.150 sets of questionnaires are collected in three low-costs housing in Kuala Lumpur area. The collected data are analysed by using descriptive statistic to discuss the findings. From the result, it shows that air-conditioner consumed 43% of the monthly household electricity consumption, followed by fans (25%) and others (32%). This means that the cooling system is consuming about 50% of the total monthly household electricity consumption. Besides that, there are more than 50% of respondents are practicing the use of energy efficient appliances at home. To overcome this high electricity consumption, the usage of energy efficient appliances shall be encouraged; the behaviour of wasting electricity consumption shall be changed; and to promote the energy saving issue to the public.
