Abstract

Malaysia is one of the countries that rich in historical stories. All of the stories have leave evidence through leaving of great diversity of the heritage buildings. Every building may have its own unique architectural styles and cultural significant. Furthermore, heritage building also playing a significant role which will boost the tourism heritage and generate the national income. Additionally, heritage building also represent the town identities and glimpses for those cities. However, there are many heritage buildings are in the poor condition as reported in the newspaper. The conservation is the most effective way to minimise this issue. This research will be conducted to interpret the terminology and concept of conservation, identify the challenges of conservation of heritage buildings in Malaysia and recommend the solution to overcome the issue in Malaysia. The research objectives will be achieved in three method in this study which are literature review, questionnaire and interview surveys. Besides, three interviewees with at least 10 years built heritage conservation experiences will be chosen for interview surveys. All the data collected from the questionnaire surveys will be analysed through Statistic Package for Social Science (SPSS) software. This research revealed that all the challenges will be divided into five major groups which are human issue, financial issue, organizational issue, environmental issue and technical issue. Secondly, all the variables of the solution to overcome the issue arise also will be categorised into five groups which are awareness and information, government support, financial support and management. Top 5 challenges and solutions will be analysed respectively. The overall findings is aimed to allow owner and government to understand conservation practice of the heritage buildings and challenges during the practice. This study also aimed to determine the solution and thus practice can be conducted smoothly.
