Abstract

A Quantity Surveyor is one of the many construction professionals. A professional quantity surveyor shall have an in-depth understanding of construction industry technology, project cost planning, project cost control and etc. Traditional roles of the Quantity Surveyors in the construction industry included single rate approximate estimating, cost planning, procurement advice, preparation of Bills of Quantities and so on. Roles of quantity surveyors are changing significantly and the construction nowadays is pushing quantity surveyor graduates to become competent in term of soft skills (The Star, 2017). One of the reasons of this change was to meet client needs and to face the competition from other professions. Competencies of the professional quantity surveyor have been discussed. The objectives of this research are: to identify the scope of work of a quantity surveyor, the required skill that a quantity surveyors graduates should have and the employer’s expectations on the soft skills and knowledge of fresh quantity surveyor graduates. To achieve the aim of this research, the literature review has been carried out to collect the secondary data. Besides that, the primary data collection will be carried out in this research through quantitative method. Questionnaires survey will be distributed to the registered consultant firms all over Malaysia. Data collected will be analyzed by using bar chart, pie chart, Likert scale formula and others. The research outcome with findings and recommendations will be given to fresh Quantity Surveyor students to help them to focus in the relevant current areas to enhance their skills and knowledge in order to stay relevant and competent in the construction industry.
