Abstract

Construction industry is one of the major development of the whole country. Often construction stakeholder mostly look at time, cost and quality of the construction building. However, the increasing rate of construction waste generation has been overlooked and it has affected the environment and public health. This study aims to tackle the issues of construction waste management by identifying the barriers encountered by the SMEs contracting firms in implementing waste management. Also, strategies have been proposed to mitigate the problem by massive construction waste generation. Questionnaire survey method has been selected in conducting the study and randomly distributed to 350 SMEs contracting firms for primary data collection. Also, 10 sets of questionnaire survey has been distributed for pilot testing to ensure the validity and reliability. The outcome is expected to serve as a guidelines to related parties and associations in mitigating the regulations and enforcement, and help in implementing construction waste management. SMEs contracting firms, which held a large proportion of business establishment in Malaysia, can result in great reduction of waste generation as a whole and help to achieve a better and sustainable building construction.
