Abstract

Quantity Surveyor plays an important role in developing the economy in construction industry among all the stakeholders. Soft skills are difficult to build, which includes personal skills and behaviour on a person. Unlike hard skills, soft skills are broadly the behaviours that graduates display under different circumstances. Hard skills will get one an interview whereas soft skills are needed to keep the job that one got. From the previous researches, it is found that there are limited studies on how to improve QS graduates’ soft skills competencies, particularly from the point of view of Higher Education Institutions. In order to bridge the gaps, this research aims to extend the study of soft skill competency of QS graduate from academic view in Malaysia. A literature review is carried out to review on the ways to improve soft skills. Interview as research instrumentation were approaching on the lecturers, tutors from university college in Kuala Lumpur. Analysis method used was coding process. Several ways are suggested among the lecturers and tutors so that the soft skills of graduates can be improved Malaysia Higher Education Institutions should take further action on improving the soft skills competencies of a QS graduates. Through the findings, the perspective was different with the previous researchers as the previous research carried out employer’s perspective. This finding could provide a new insight to institutional practitioners such as lecturers, tutors or speakers on how to inspire the students or graduates in increasing their soft skill competencies, which in turns add value to the students or graduates when they form part of the real society world.
