Abstract

Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a technology where it is not widely used in Malaysia construction industry yet. BIM provides various solutions that can be used to prevent most of the problem from pre-construction to post-construction stage including design stage. However, in Malaysia construction industry the rate of implementation of BIM are still very low even though there are various of benefits that can be gained through BIM implementation. But there are barriers such as high implementation cost and lack of knowledge that stop one from implement BIM. The aim of this research is to enhance the implementation level in Malaysia construction industry. It is to identify the advantages, barriers and strategies of BIM and to investigate the current status in Malaysia on BIM. It helps to spread the awareness of the benefits that BIM could provide and help in numerous ways. The data obtained using qualitative method and collected through interview session. The interview has been conducted with 25 respondents on their experience and knowledge regarding BIM to analyzed its advantages, barriers, and the current status. Besides, the interview also conducted to identify the strategies use in a successful BIM project through respondent’s experience. Data collected is further analyzed to obtain a result to draw a conclusion on this research. The data is analyzed by comparing the transcript answers from the respondents. Based on the data collected most respondents agreed that BIM provides many advantages, they also said that the barriers are mainly on the high implementation cost. Moreover, respondents also agreed that the initiative provide by the government in supporting BIM is a good sign. During discussion data collected and literature review is discussed, majority of the result is similar to the literature review. Hence, the outcome of this research is positive as it has met all the requirements. This research will contribute information regarding BIM to the construction industry and academic Therefore, the construction industry and academic will have a better understanding on BIM.
