Abstract

Heritage building is a present of corporeal artefacts and as a gathering or society that are heritable from past generation and continue to develop and benefit for future generations. It recorded the pass eras’ story in the ways of the beautiful of the architecture, decoration and interior design of the building. However, the rapid growth of population, globalization and industrialization in Penang, modern techniques are created to fulfil the demands and needs of public, seldom of people appreciate to old buildings and chose to have modern architecture that least meaning in todays. Some of the heritage building in Penang’s city centre had been abandoned and become an unpleasant sights of the city. Those buildings that left unoccupied for long times are start to befell defects, it encountered defects much faster compared to buildings in using due to its sensitive and delicate structure. The concept of protecting of historical buildings in the form of preservation, conservation and adaptive restoration or reuse isn’t as important as new developments in nowadays. So, these research study was carried out to study the challenges in preserve and rejuvenate the Penang's City Centre heritage buildings, identify the benefits in preserve and rejuvenate the Penang's City Centre heritage building and to study the initiatives taken to preserve and rejuvenate the Penang's City Centre heritage buildings. The methodologies that applied for this research was starts with using the literature review to identified the challenges faced, studied the benefits and the initiatives taken to preserve and rejuvenate the Penang's City Centre heritage buildings based on previous researches. This was followed by distributions of questionnaire survey forms to those parties who related to the study, such as staffs of Penang Tourist Center, Tourist Information Centre, travel agency or construction industry. The data were then analysed using SPSS Cronbach;s Alpha analysis, frequency analysis and descriptive analysis. The finding indicates that the most significant challenge in preserve and rejuvenate Penang’s city center heritage building is lack of good quality original material because the materials such as heart pine and wood from old-growth forests that are no longer available on today. While, the most significant benefits in preserve and rejuvenate Penang’s city center heritage building is economic aspects because heritage building can boost business for the local area’s economy over long term. Lastly, set strict guidelines to new buildings is the most effective initiatives taken to preserve and rejuvenate the heritage building.
