Abstract

The global economic downturn in combination with an expansion of higher education has resulted in an excessive number of college graduates. In addition, the decline in the employment demand in the real estate industry leads to a highly competitive labour market in the industry. Besides that, there is a mismatch between the knowledge and skills demanded from the industries and the actual knowledge and skills possessed by real estate graduates. This means that talent shortage occurs in the real estate industry. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the adequacy of the current real estate education system to serve the industry requirements in equipping real estate graduates with desirable knowledge and skills. The objectives of this research are to analyse the knowledge and skills desired by the real estate practitioners towards the real estate graduates and their satisfaction level towards the graduates‟ performance. There are 67 sets of qualified responses were received within one month from the date of distribution of 116 sets of questionnaires. Then, the descriptive approach was used to analyse the data. The study reveals that real estate graduates should be equipped with a good valuation, professional ethics and professional practice knowledge. Apart from that, graduates should have good skills and personality. Furthermore, this research found out that real estate valuation practitioners are quite satisfied with the graduates‟ performance. However, there are some improvements can be made to make it better. These include improving the current legal-related subject and adding new subjects that will improve graduates‟ interpersonal and communication skills as well as decision making and problem solving skills. Last but not least, the graduates should work hard to improve their performance in terms of knowledge and skills.
