Abstract

A Quantity Surveyor is a professional working within the construction industry concerned with construction economics. The QS profession in Malaysia has evolved as a results of client’s additional needs and requirements. Nowadays, client not only request for traditional services but also asking for comtemporary services and scopes. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to examine the traditional and comtemporary roles of Quantity Surveying Profession in Malaysian construction industry and its implications towards Quantity Surveying graduates. Three objectives were formulated for this research, which are (1) to study the traditional and contemporary roles of quantity surveyors profession, (2) to define the challenges faced by quantity surveyors profession and (3) to propose to improve performance of quantity surveying graduates. This research has found out the potential threats and solutions affecting the future of quantity surveying profession. The components of threats consist of competition from other professions, poor marketing in quantity surveying profession and quality of quality of quantity surveying graduates. The components of solution to improve performance of QS graduates consist of enhance the education framework of QS program, develop and maintain professional expertise in core competencies and diversification of QS scope of services. From the questionnaire survey conducted and data analysed, it found out that potential solutions and threats have strong significant in changing the career future of quantity surveyor. This research outcome also provides a guideline for the university to review and improve the syllabus of Quantity Surveying Course so that the graduates could stay relevant and competitive in the construction industry.
