Abstract

In conjunction with the development of IoT Smart Campus in Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (TARUC), incorporating various systems under one roof for the convenience of staffs and students, hereby this final year project (FYP) entitled “Place Inspection System” For improved day to day urban mobility for both students and staffs in (TARUC), Place Inspection System enables near real time monitoring and provides better convenience having an Android app to remotely monitor whenever required. It is developed using Python 3.4.2, Raspberry Pi, Raspi Camera v2.1 and OpenCV libraries, it has motion detection for private purposes and public mode for daily monitoring at different locations with 2 modes. Private mode works by having Gaussian blur and dilation to detect its foreground and background of the motion, then initiates the recording whereas public mode records a few seconds, then few seconds of rest followed by another record continuously. Making use of MQTT protocol and mySQL database, stored images of PNG format or MP4 videos are made possible to be published remotely to an Android app for near real time monitoring. Old images or videos that are 1 month old will be deleted on its next run for storage optimization. In addition, it is believed that this system can become an efficient alternative to conventional CCTVs by reducing as much bandwidth and storage needed. Lastly, this project is fully adhered to the project objectives even at the earliest stages. This project has good portability where it can used in different locations, and is maintainable in near future. Unfortunately, the performance is slightly disappointing due to the limitations of Raspberry Pi hardware and the public MQTT broker used. Nevertheless, can be further improved or incorporated with other smart projects to diversify to not only places but traffic and other usages to improve its commercialisable value.
