Abstract

In recent years, fire safety of high-rise condominium has been attracted extensive attention. A statistical analysis produced by Department of Statistics Malaysia demonstrated the extreme events and disasters arising from fire incidents was amounted to 29,356 cases in 2017 and it resulted total of 446 injuries and 165 death as well as reflected total losses of RM5.2 million. It found that occupants often did not recognise alarm signal as fire alarm signal and will choose to ignore it completely which in turns delay the evacuation process and resulted tragedy. In fact, many of these factors can be controlled for if the occupants realized and deal with an appropriate fire management plan. To tackle such issue, this study is conducted to discuss various human behaviour under the fire situation through a focus on the challenges that occupants will experience in a high-rise condominium. The information gather will then be used to produced solution for the respective issue. After conducting this research, it is known that the main human behaviour during fire incident is they will firstly interpret the situation rather than leave immediately due to the challenges that have yet to be solved. It found that the major challenges that delay the evacuation process is insufficient emergency signage and fire management plan. In this paper, the questionnaire survey which conducted within PV 15 might cause the result of findings to be less prominent since the issue is around the Malaysia rather than in a particular area. Therefore, the research study is expected to establish the related issue as a guideline and subsequently the research study must be extended to different area in Malaysia to properly address the issue.
