Abstract

The growing concern on the climate change and environment internationally has driven the real estate industry to focus on the importance on sustainability and giving priority on it. Since building sector is the major contributors to carbon footprint, property management companies play a vital role in implementing eco-friendly and energy-efficient spaces by incorporating sustainable features in managing the property. Thus, the objective of this research study is to evaluate the level of awareness and perception of property managers in sustainable property management practice in order to develop a sound and practical sustainable property management. The methodology of this research study is through reviewing various journal articles to collect information regarding on sustainable property management and conducting interviews with property managers or any practitioners in Klang Valley. The available and applicable sustainable feature in creating a sustainable building by using various energy efficient measures are discussed in Literature Review. The awareness and perception of sustainability in real estate by other countries are also being discussed in this chapter. The collected data through the interview session is then analysed and critically discussed and compared in theoretical and practical wise. The opinion and the insight of the property managers on sustainable property management practice and applicability in terms of lighting management, water management, air-conditioning management, waste management, smart building management system and retrofitting is obtained to evaluate their perception and awareness towards sustainable property management. It can be observed that the mind-set of the building user and property managers needs to be aligned to be environmental conscious in order to adopt sustainability measure in property management for the overall benefit.
