Abstract

Green Wall System (GWS) defined that “Climbing plants or vegetation grown and cover on a vertical surface (walls, facades, blind walls, partition walls, supporting structures) internally or externally with a selection of plant species, including all the functions to grow plants on or within the wall of a building.” It has gained tremendous popularity in recent years, and this offers an opportunity to integrate it as a part of the public act in cities. The green wall system was a relatively new sustainable design in Malaysia in enhancing the benefits to the environment or individual compared to the green roof system. Meanwhile, it meets the goal of the Construction Industry Transformation Programme (CITP) 2016 to 2020 to develop a low carbon with sustainable building and infrastructure country. Most research in Green Wall System focuses on an environmental and technical aspect that considers its benefits, challenges of implementing, characteristic, acoustic impact, and general awareness. In this dissertation, the objectives are to identify challenges and maintainability issues of implementing Green Wall System in Malaysian High-rise Buildings. Thus, develop strategies to overcome and increase its implementation, and to identify the significant maintainability issue which required more technical information from the Green Wall System experts and specialists. A qualitative method adopted by using personnel interviews to identify the challenges of implementing the Green Wall System in high-rise buildings as well as the maintainability issue of Green Wall System in a high-rise building. The target respondents selected for personnel interviewing are the green wall specialists or contractors, who engaged in the construction industry with the fundamental knowledge of Green Wall System to collect the technical and reliable data information in order to achieve the objectives of this research study.
