Abstract
Construction industry has long been evaluated as dangerous, fragmented, wasteful, inefficient and ineffective. Traditional construction strategy faces a lot of difficulties, such as delay in completing the project in time, spending beyond the budget, building defects and over dependence on foreign workers. Therefore, in order to overcome this issues, new technological methods have been implemented such as Lean Construction to improve the productivity level of the sector by eliminating waste in the construction process. However, the implementation of lean construction is still considering low and completely a new concept to Malaysia construction industry. The main aim of this paper is to identify and classify all significant barriers to a sustainable lean construction implementation. Therefore, a quantitative research strategy was carried out for this study. The questionnaire survey forms have distributed to 100 construction parties in the Malaysia construction industry. Then, the secondary data are from literature review. According to this study, it found that the significant barriers stopping the implementation of sustainable lean construction is lack of attentiveness and commitment from top management, difficulties in understanding the concept of lean construction, lack of exposure on the need to adopt the lean construction concept, lack of proper training, weak communication among clients, consultants and contractors, the tendency of construction firms to apply traditional management concepts as apposed to productivity and quality management concepts, attitude and ability to work in group and long implementation period of lean concept in construction processes. The research result shows the lack of proper training is the main barriers to the implementation of sustainable lean construction. Hence, more solution and efforts are needed to encourage construction parties to have a knowledge in the sustainable lean construction concept. This paper concludes by suggesting further researchers to investigate the effective solutions or strategies to eliminate these barriers in order to success in implementing the sustainable lean construction concept in Malaysia construction industry.
