Abstract
The urbanization has affected the greenery in the Kuala Lumpur, and creating numerous environmental problems. Implementation of green roof could help to create a better environmental and reduce the negative urbanization effects. The popularity of the green roof system implementation has increased in many countries due to their benefits. However, the green roof practice information in Malaysia as only a small handful of buildings adopted green roofs in Malaysia. If the concept and challenges of the green roof development in Malaysia cannot be identified and understand by construction industry players, the environment problems will grow serious. This research paper consists of three objectives, which introduce the benefit of the green roof technology, the challenges of its application in Malaysia, as well as the measures suggested to encourage the green roof implementation in Malaysia. A quantitative method will be used in this study. 150 set of questionnaire survey has been distributed to the construction professionals by hand, email or google form. It is vital to examine the understanding of the construction professionals towards the concept of green roof technology as they are the pioneer in the application of the green roof systems. There are 50 set of the questionnaire survey were collected successfully out of 150. It can be summarized that energy conservation is the most significant benefit of the green roof implementation in Malaysia. Whist, the main challenges of the green roof systems in Malaysia is the high construction and maintenance cost of the green roof implementation. This situation could be improved with the support from the Government. This study had identified the concept and challenges of the green roof development in Malaysia. This study also provided the solutions to reduce the challenges of green roof implementation in Malaysia in the near future.
