Abstract

The purpose of the study was to examine the effects of chronic sodium bicarbonate ingestion (NaHCO3) (0.5g.kg-1) on 60 minutes endurance treadmill running performance and recovery rate among trained runners. 7 trained runners were recruited (age: 20.0 ± 2.0 years old; weight: 57.71 ± 6.0kg; height: 168.4 ± 4.7cm; running experience: 2.71 ± 1.3 years; best performance time for 10KM: 50.0 ± 6.0 minutes; VO2max: 58.4 ± 3.8 ml.kg.min-1) from Tunku Abdul Rahman University College in this study with 2 experimental trials which included 1 NaHCO3 (0.5g.kg-1) trial and 1 PLA trial (0.5g.kg-1 of NaCI) 5 days of ingestion prior to the 60 minutes endurance running (30 min of preloading run followed by 30 min of maximum distance run) on day 6. Each trial was separated at least 14 days apart for the wash out of the alkalosis substance in the body. The data were analysed by using Two – Way ANOVA (Repeated Measured) and Paired Sample T- Test. Results showed that the distance covered in 30 min maximal distance run for the NaHCO3 trial was further than the PLA trial (4967.10 ± 79.00m vs 4139.70 ± 100.91; P = 0.032) associated with greater blood lactate level (6.17 ± 2.10 mmol.L-1 vs 5.02 ± 2.06 mmol.L-1). At post – recovery, the blood lactate level has no significant difference between NaHCO3 trial and PLA trial. However, NaHCO3 has larger decrementfrom 6.17 ± 2.10 mmol.L-1 to 2.22 ± 0.88 mmol.L-1(~64%, P > 0.05) compared to PLA trial which from 5.02 ± 2.06 mmol.L-1 to 3.21 ± 1.76 mmol.L-1(~36%, P > 0.05). In conclusion, the chronic sodium bicarbonate ingestion (0.5g.kg-1of BW) can improved 60 minutes endurance treadmill running but for recovery rate there was no significant difference between both NaHCO3 and PLA trials. However, the recovery rate for NaHCO3 trial has larger decrement than PLA trial.
