Abstract

The purpose of the study was to examine the effects of 6 weeks catching skill training on catching ability and physical activity adherence among non-athletes. The training programme was adopted from “Teaching elementary-age youth catching skills using theoretically based motor-development strategies” by Drost et al. (2015) to examine the effects of catching skill training on physical activity adherence. The participants were delimited to Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (TARUC) students. The 36 subjects were comprised of 15 males and 21 females, aged from 17-20 years old. Subjects were divided into 2 groups using systematic counter balancing method using catching skill pretest scores and was randomly assigned into EG (n=18) and CG (n=18). EG went through 6 weeks of catching skill training while CG went through 6 weeks of free play. Training frequency was set at twice per week with 40-45 minutes per session. The subjects were tested on their catching skill test together with their physical adherence level scores using questionnaire. Data analysis showed that there was a significant difference (p=0.001) in the mean post-test catching skill score between the 2 groups. EG had significant improvements in both catching skill (p=0,000) and physical activity adherence scores (p=0.000). This concluded that 6 weeks of catching skill training had a positive effect on both catching skill and physical activity adherence level.
