Abstract

In this research study dissertation is completed by a researcher which is regarding a topic of study on Quantity Surveyor’s workload and the strategies of improvement to reduce their workload and enhance the productivity and performance on their profession. The initiation of this research study is come from the previous dissertation study regarding about the overtime hours of Quantity Surveyor in Malaysia and recommendation study suggested by the researcher which is the study on workloads of Quantity Surveyor in Malaysia. In order to achieve the aim for this research study which is improve the efficiency and performance on Quantity Surveyor, there are several objectives which are proposed in this study and they are first to identify the excessiveness level on Quantity Surveyor’s workload handled in a project. Following up with identify the impacts and consequences of workload bring towards on Quantity Surveyor’s role. Lastly, this research is aim to implement and propose some strategies and methods on improvement in the productivity and performance of Quantity Surveyor which mainly to reduce the workload. In the chapter 1 will be included the background of this dissertation study and current problem statement faced in the construction industry in Malaysia. Organisation of tis dissertation will be discussed in the end of chapter 1. In the chapter of literature review will mainly focusing about the review on others journalist who research about similar kind of related topics and from their review able to get supporting information and analysis data for this study. The definition of workload and identification of Quantity Surveyor’s services will be discussed in this chapter. Next, the main impacts or consequences of workload from all the journals and articles found such as stress, health, error & mistake, family issue & family crisis, worklife balance, and marriage problem will be interpreted in this chapter. In addition, some Page XIII major problems which cause the weightage and bulks of workloads increase in construction industry will be bought to discuss in this literature review. Besides that, there are 4 kind of strategies of improvement on performance and productivity of Quantity Surveyor and they are employ more potential Quantity Surveyors, categories into different department which also called departmentalization of Quantity Surveyors, implementation new technologies system and programme software, and also limitation of working hours of Quantity Surveyor. Chapter 3, research methodology interpreted the method be executed for this research study. Quantitative methodology study is selected instead of qualitative methodology. There is only primary data collection in this research study and there does not have any secondary data collection. Questionnaire survey was proposed which is part of the research methodology and able to obtain a quantity amount of response answer to achieve the objective for this research study. The population for this research study is limited as only 335 register quantity surveyor firms and there is no sampling required for this research methodology. Data analysis will be conducted after all data be collected and there are a few methods to interpret and analysis the result of the survey which are using measure of central tendency, likert-type scale and RII method. For the chapter regards data analysis and result determined that there are 100 of respondents from the questionnaire survey be chosen for the analyse. Based on the result analyse that preparation of tender documentation and preparation of feasibility study is the most excessive workload which held by Quantity Surveyor. Furthermore, from the workload leads the consequence such as stress, error and mistake and also poor work-life balance interpret the highest amount of Quantity Surveyor faced from the impact of workload. Lastly, majority respondents suggested that implementation of new technologies and programme software will help and assist Quantity Surveyor in reduce their workload and enhance the productivity of works. In last chapter will mentioned about the recap of study, implication & contribution, limitation of the research and also the recommendation for future studies. The limitation of this study was discussed in chapter 5 where the time constraint to complete this dissertation study and affect the data collection during data analysis period does not obtain the high potential respondent for this study and affect the outcome of the result. However, the objective of this study still determined as the largest of amount of respondent carried out and sufficient to justify the outcome result of the data analysis. Lastly there are some suggestion for further studies in the future for next researcher and hope it will help to improve the performance and develop a quality role of Quantity Surveyor in the way finding more another suitable and useable strategy to facilitate current construction industry in Malaysia.
