Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of peer motivation on sport participation among college students. To date, there are no studies that focuses on peer motivation on sport participation among college students. The conceptual framework of this study included five subscale of peer motivation. The five subscale consisted of 21 items: ‘improvement’ (4 statements), ‘relatedness support’ (3 statements), ‘effort’ (5 statements), ‘intra-team competition and ability (5 statements) and ‘intra-team conflict’ (4 statements). A total of 278 participants were purposive chosen to answer the questionnaire in order to meet the requirements and criteria of this study. The raw scores of from the Peer Motivational Climate in Youth Sport Questionnaire were used for analysis. The items of the inventory were weighted on a 7 point Likert-type scale from Strongly disagree (1) to Strongly agree (7). Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyse the data collected. Inferential statistics such as t-test and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used. T-test and One-way ANOVA were computed to determine whether differences existed in peer motivation mean scores according to gender, age category, mode of commuting to college, living arrangement, partner in doing activity and the Physical Activity Index. All t-test and ANOVA in this study were carried out using SPS (version 21) for windows. All test of significance were at the 0.05 level. For the one-way ANOVA, where F-tests were significant, a post-hoc test using the Tukey-HSD test was employed.
