Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of 6 weeks imagery training on volleyball service among the volleyball players. A total of 34 volleyball players from Tunku Abdul Rahman University College were recruited in this study. They were assigned in to control group (CG), imagery training group (ITG), physical training group (PTG) and combination group (ITG+PTG). ITG received 10 minutes imagery of volleyball overhead serve, PTG received 20 actual volleyball overhead serve, ITG+PTG was 10 minutes of imagery of volleyball overhead serve then follow by the 20-actual volleyball overhead serve while CG was no any training but both groups were undertaking college volleyball training during intervention. Result showed that ITG have 10% of improvement (from 34.0±3.7 to 37.4±3.7) and showed significant difference between pre-and post-test (t(7)= -4.217, p=0.004), PTG not showed any significant difference (t(7)= -1.033, p=0.336 ) but have 5% of improvement between pre-and post-test (from 34.1 to 35.9), ITG+PTG showed 9.8% of improvement (from 33.8 to 37.1) and showed significant difference between pre-and post-test (t(7)= -3.65, p=0.008), while CG not showed any significant difference (t(7)= 2.171, p=0.067) and have decrease of performance between pre-and post-test [32.5 to 30.5 (-6.1%)]. In conclusion, the present study demonstrates the imagery training alone and combination of imagery training and physical practice could help to improve volleyball service performance more rather than physical practice alone.
