Abstract
This project aims to present a study based upon the assumption that chronotype is associated with the physical activity level among university students in a private university in Klang Valley. Chronotype is the diurnal preference, or one’s preference during certain times of the day to perform mental and physical tasks according to the Horne and Östberg. The association between the faculty and the chronotype is p= 0.393 (p> 0.05), which shows no significant correlation between the both variables. The intermediate chronotype showed the highest percentage and frequency of university students, 63.3% (n= 273) and followed by the moderate evening type, 25.1% (n= 108). There was a low physical activity level (40.6%) among university students, female university students have a higher percentage of inactivity compared to the male university students. There was a significant correlation between the chronotype (MEQ score) and the physical activity level (MET score), p= 0.008 (p< 0.05) and indicated a morning person would have higher physical activity level compared to the evening person. There is no significant correlation between the faculty and the physical activity level (MET score), p= 0.057 (p>0.05). There are some major reasons that cause the low physical activity level among university students instead of faculty include cost, accessibility, parental involvement, self-confidence and general apathy. Therefore, the findings of this study highlight the importance of determining chronotype and its relationship between physical activity level among university students.
