Abstract

The main objective of the present study is to further understand the relationship between the Dark Triad traits of personality and insomnia as well as whether specific Dark Triad traits are able to predict insomnia. The findings were based on data collected from 172 participants through the use of an online questionnaire platform, Qualtrics survey. The Short Dark Triad (Jones & Paulhus, 2014) was used to assess the dark personality traits whereas insomnia was assessed using the Insomnia Severity Index (Bastien, Vallieres, & Morin, 2001). Results of the present study did not find a correlation between dark personalities and insomnia nonetheless present study discovered that Narcissism and Psychopathy of the Dark Triad has predictive values over insomnia. The study concluded that individuals with narcissistic tendencies and psychopathic traits tend to have difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep and having good quality of sleep hence these people suffer from sleeping problems such as insomnia. The present study also provides insight regarding the presence of different individual behaviors such as emotional regulation and coping capabilities that may also affect sleep instead of primarily personality itself.
