Abstract

The increment of the demand of the electricity for cooling effect in the residential building has increases the burden of the residents especially for the low-income group. This aim of the study is to carry out the survey and analysis on the influence of the features of the building and the occupant’s characteristics towards the electricity consumption in the public housing. Total 150 sets of data are collected from three of the public housing in Setapak area. Respondents are picked randomly from the occupants of the selected public housing area to fill up the questionnaires. Regression analysis is performed to identify the relationship between the variables and to predict the changes in the electricity consumption if the variables are changed. The results from the regression analysis found that both building features and occupant’s characteristics are significant to the electricity expenditure, but occupant’s characteristics has the greater influence on the consumption of electricity. Among the building features, ceiling height, floor area, building age, number of rooms and windows type are significant to the electricity usage. Whereas for occupant’s characteristics, number of occupants, household income and ownership types are also found to give impact to electricity consumption.
