Abstract
With three determined issues which constituted the needs to carry out Post-Occupancy Evaluation (POE) in TARUC, a quantitative research was being conducted with the aim to assess the performance of TARUC’s physical learning environment in the view of occupants’ satisfaction level in order to increase the awareness of campus administrator on the problem faced by occupants in utilizing the facilities and amenities provided and suggested with the possible solutions. There are three objectives carried out in this survey which was identifying the elements of POE in assessing building performance of higher educational institutions, investigating the satisfaction level of occupants on physical environment in TARUC and generating suggestions and feedbacks from occupants to increase their satisfaction level on physical environment in TARUC. POE had been conducted widely in higher educational since the 1960s with design practitioners (Tookaloo and Smith, 2015) which significantly means POE is suitable in assessing building performance through students’ satisfaction. Under this research, the determined definition of POE was to suit for this survey where POE as a term for wide range of activities aimed at assessing the performance of completed buildings and the occupants’ satisfaction towards the built environment (Hewitt et al., 2006; Agyekum, Ayarkwa, and Amoah, 2016). The technique for data collection includes primary and secondary sources. Primary source which involve survey approach and problem-solving approach were allocated for second and third objective whereas secondary source refers to descriptive format to achieve first objective. Judgmental or purposive sampling as one of the non-probabilities sampling has been selected as the respondents in this research has to fulfil the requirement of being xi occupied any areas within TARUC main campus for minimum one year and excluded those who study for A-level, pre-university and first year in Diploma and Degree. By adopting Questionnaire Survey, the data was collected through quantitative method and analyzed by using descriptive statistical method through frequency distribution and measurements of central tendency whereas open-ended questions were being analyzed by using content analysis and coding which presented in the form of tabulation and charts with the aids of Microsoft Words and Excel. The data were analysed according to each part and questions in designed Questionnaire. Second part of Questionnaire were designed to achieve first objective, third part of Questionnaire were to achieve second objective and third objective. The results had proven that all 10 POE elements identified through Chapter 2 were the main aspects in assessing performance of physical environment in tertiary education. Besides, both Functional and Technical Performance of TARUC’s learning environment having an average mean of above 2.5000 (2.6826 and 2.7928) which was slightly satisfied by all 380 respondents. There were 110 numbers of suggestion listed at Chapter 4.7 which was proposed by 380 respondents for better improvement of TARUC’s physical environment but there were only four POE elements were corresponding to the highest vote on each low satisfied or dissatisfied venues and facilities. In other words, these proposed suggestions were very critical to be solved immediately. The conclusion was drawn that the research had met all three objectives and contribution to the society as well as recommendation for future study were also being listed out in the end chapter of this research.
