Abstract
A chalcone derived Schiff base was successfully synthesized and characterized. In this project, a Schiff base was formed from a reaction between 4-methyl-3-thiosemicarbazide and trans-chalcone. The synthesized compound underwent characterization process which involves Fourier-Transformed Infrared (FTIR) Spectrophotometer, 1H and 13C Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), and Mass Spectrometry (MS). The analysis of the results yield a conclusion where the compound obtained has the same structure as the proposed Schiff base. The characterization process has also proven that the Schiff base obtained is in the form of thione tautomer, at both solid and liquid states.
