Abstract

Supercapacitor is one of the promising energy storage devices with remarkable properties. In this study, a new ternary composite of reduced graphene oxide, indium oxide, and molybdenum oxide (rGO/In2O3/MoOx) is synthesised via green one-step hydrothermal method. The synthesised composites were characterised by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and X-Ray powder diffraction (XRD). XRD analysis confirms the formation of In2O3 and MoOx with in-situ reduction of graphene oxide into rGO. SEM and EDX reveal the even distribution of rGO sheets, In2O3 and MoOx microparticles in a 3D-interconnected structure. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) was conducted to evaluate the electrochemical performance of the composites. Compared to composites synthesised with ethylene glycol as the reducing agent, the composites synthesised via sodium hydroxide exhibit more superior electrochemical performance with the highest specific capacitance of 44 F/g at a scan rate of 25 mV/s, offering 69% and 12% enhancement over individual In2O3 and rGO/In2O3 binary composites, respectively. This demonstrates that ternary composite electrodes can improve the electrochemical performance of supercapacitors. Nevertheless, optimisation of the hydrothermal synthesis parameters is necessary to produce ternary nanocomposites that could lead to significant performance improvement.
