Abstract

A new pandemic which was officially name as Covid-19 by the World Health Organization (WHO) has spreading furiously in every country. In order to curb such pandemic, the Malaysia Government have decided to implement Movement Control Order (MCO) on 18th March 2020. Such order has restricted the construction industry in Malaysia to stop work until the MCO is lifted or further notice from the Government. Therefore, this research is carried out to study the problems faced by the construction industry due to Covid-19, how the new standard operation procedure (SOP) affects the industry and what is the potential strategies to help the industry to recover from this recession as soon as possible. Literature review provides a brief picture on the potential problems faced by the construction industry due to Covid-19, the effects of adopting new SOP towards the industry and the strategies to help the industry to recover from this recession. Questionnaire survey forms and interview questions will be developed based on the content in literature review. In order to ensure the creditability of this research, two methods of primary data collection were adopted in this research for different group of samples. Questionnaire survey forms were prepared for individuals who are working in the construction related field while interview was prepared for professions who has the background of working as contractor, consultant and supplier in the construction industry. The primary data will be collected in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor area. The collected quantitative data from questionnaire survey form will be analysed through Statistical Package for the Social Science (SPSS) software and qualitative data will be analysed and categorised by the researcher manually by using Microsoft Excel. This study is conducted to find out the difficulties the construction sector in currently facing and what kind of resources shall be allocated to assist the sector to recover from this pandemic.
