Abstract

To minimise the negative impact to the environment and human health from the booming of construction industry in Malaysia, the idea of Green Building has been introduced. The Green Building Index has been launched for 11 years from 2009 but the awareness of Green Building in Malaysia is still slow. Therefore, this research is aims to survey the housing purchasers’ views on Green Building in Malaysia. The objectives of this research is to assess the knowledge of housing purchasers on green building, to investigate the willingness of housing purchasers to buy green buildings and to determine the factors influencing the purchase of green building. In order to collect the necessary data for further analysis, questionnaire survey is used to collect the primary data through online and face-to-face delivery and literature review is used to collect the secondary data for this research. 57 responses had been obtained through the online questionnaire survey from the potential housing purchasers. With the aid of Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS), descriptive analysis and inferential analysis such as one-way ANOVA and correlation were conducted to analyse the data collected. In brief, the result shows that the awareness level of Green Building is at a level below average. Most of the respondents have heard Green Building before but still not paying attention on it. These findings could be used as a reference for the future development of Green Building in Malaysia. There are also some limitations for this research: time constraints, low response rate and uneven distribution of questionnaire surveys. To withstand the limitation, the researcher recommends implementing more methods to distribute and collect the questionnaire survey in further study.
