Abstract

In order to combat the spreading of the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic, Malaysia has implemented a nationwide lockdown, namely the "Movement Control Order". The construction industry is one of the most affected industry as every construction project was forced to stop work on site. Therefore, this research was conducted to highlight the current situation of the pandemic in the construction scene. The main objectives of the research are to investigate the impacts caused by the pandemic on construction projects and the relevant management strategies to combat cost and schedule overruns of the construction projects due to the pandemic. The research is conducted from the perspective of Quantity Surveyors in Klang Valley from various construction parties. This study utilized both primary and secondary data collection to obtain the data, in which the primary data collection is carried out by using a mixed-method of research design. However, the quantitative approach is more emphasized as the questionnaire survey approach is employed to obtain quantitative data for analysis through the Statistical Package for the Social Science (SPSS) software. Descriptive analysis method, reliability test, relative important index (RII) and spearman rank correlation coefficient test are then carried out to analyze the data. The ranking of the impacts faced and management strategies used are analyzed and further discussed with the responses obtained from the open-ended questions in order to achieve the objectives of this research. The research is conducted in hopes of various construction parties being able to use the findings in mitigating such risks of pandemic and to identify the management strategies that they can apply on their projects in the case where a pandemic happens and causes cost and schedule overruns to their projects. The limitations and recommendations for future studies are then laid out in the final chapter.
