Abstract

Nowadays, construction materials which act as the major element for construction project has become more uncertainty and complex due to the wide variety of materials specification and inconsistent market conditions. Therefore, material management is introduced to manage construction materials and confront with the uncertainties. Material management is a system of planning and controlling to ensure the right quality and quantity of materials and equipment according with the schedule especially stock control practice. However, the previous studies only focus on the overall topic and studies on the stock control practice are limited. Therefore, the research was conducted to explore more information regarding with this practice in Malaysian construction industry. This research is using quantitative method and 184 sets of questionnaires were distributed to contractor firms from G6 to G7 in Kuala Lumpur. When data collection is carried out, the collected data will be inputted into SPSS software for data analysis processes. There are four sets of data which will be analysed and they are corresponding with the sections of questionnaire. There are 4 sections in the questionnaire which are Section A- respondents’ background and Section B, C and D which related with respective research objectives. Section B is regarding with the current material management processes in Malaysian construction industry (objective 1) while Section C is related with the effects of poor stock control practice of material management on construction sites (objective 2). Lastly, Section D is used to determine the third objective which is to identify the solutions which used to improve the stock control practice of material management on construction sites (objective 3). The method of analysis of this research is descriptive statistic method on the four data sets. There is a data screening question which set up in section A and it is regarding whether the respondent is familiar with material management or not. The analysis for three objectives will based on the number of respondents after data screening. Furthermore, Cronbach’s alpha and Pearson product moment correlations tests will be carried out to identify the reliability and validity of the collected data. Discussion on the analysis results will be conducted in Chapter 4. Last but not least, the contribution of this research is to create awareness of the importance of good stock control among different parties and improve the overall management practices. Besides, conclusion of this research, limitations which faced by the researcher and recommendations for future similar researches also will be discussed in Chapter 5.
