Abstract

Urbanisation process has caused large proportions of green area had been replaced by concrete forest and became as an impervious area. Besides, it also caused environmental issues like urban heat island, traffic congestion and air pollution. Hence, the approach to mitigate these environmental issues caused by the urbanisation process were urged by Malaysia. By adopting green roof system to the existing or new building, the problem of lessening in green area and environmental problems in Malaysia can be greatly reduced. Thus, the objectives of this research are to determine the construction practitioners views on the benefits, challenges and critical success factors of green roof construction in Malaysia. The research methods to be used in this study were through literature review and questionnaire survey. Questionnaire was administered to 82 respondents who are involved in the construction industry. The data were analysed by using SPSS descriptive analysis and Relative Importance Index (RII) ranking. Based on the findings, the top 3 significant factors of critical success factors of green roof construction are from the plants selection and locational factors which are regional and local climate and rainfall. Meanwhile the data collected for challenges of green roof construction have proved that cost which equivalent to high maintenance cost and installation cost are the most significant challenges that hinder the adoption of green roof construction in Malaysia. The limitations of this research was time of conduct for the data collection. Thus, future study may consider provide more time for the whole data collection cycle. Besides, to identify and evaluate the effective solutions and strategies to address and mitigate the challenges to the adoption of green roof construction. Moreover, by having a standard guideline in Malaysia and government incentives to accelerate the marketability and progress of implementing green roof systems in Malaysia.
