Abstract

The term “green building” is frequently used side by side the term “sustainable construction” and both these terms have also been used interchangeably. Sustainable construction mainly focuses on the wellbeing of the community with regard to environmental, social and economic problems. Sustainability is a process which able to create a lively economy and high quality of life regarding to the demand to sustain natural resources and preserve our environment. There are several studies shown that some oversea countries like Singapura, India, Australia and Philippines has explored and analysed thoroughly the green and sustainable construction aspect. However, green and sustainable construction is considered at middle stage in Malaysia. This is due to most of the Malaysians still prefer conventional construction method as they are not realized that the presence of this new sustainable and green technology construction and also lack of understanding on the benefits of green practices. The introduction of sustainable construction is to replace the conventional construction method in order to reduce the environmental impacts. The sustainable design has been classified as the easiest method for professional stakeholders to start incorporating green principles in construction projects. Therefore, the main aim of this research is to determine the design criteria in implementing sustainability in building construction. Besides, this study aims to identify the benefits of green and sustainable building construction. In addition, it also investigates the challenges in adopting green and sustainable building construction. Furthermore, this study assesses the differences between contractors and developers in term of challenges in adopting green and sustainable building construction.
