Abstract
Talent drought of skilled workers is the shortfall of workforce in specific trades or shortage of workforce with requisite skills. Talent drought of skilled workers can be minimized only when their cause are identified. This paper presents the findings of a study conducted in construction industry Malaysia with the aim to analyze the talent drought of skilled workers in construction industry to identify the root causes and effects of talent drought of skilled workers and to recommend possible solutions or strategies adopted to overcome the talent drought of skilled workers in the construction industry. A total of five were contributed to the root causes, three effects and five possible solution of talent drought of skilled workers were identified based on literature review. The analysis revealed that root cause of talent drought of skilled workers issues with greatest significance is contributed by lack of proper training and knowledge, followed by poor participation of local manpower in construction related jobs, unstable income, workforce aging and low unemployment. Survey also shown that delay in project is the main effect for talent drought of skilled workers issues. It followed by poor quality outcome and company suffered loss of monetary. More so, the most possible solution to overcome the talent drought of skilled workers is by implementing training program to overcome the issues and followed by encouragement from the government, refocused hiring practices, extension on retirement age and make the trade more glamorous. Questionnaires and interviews were designed based on the research specific objectives and used as the main instrument for data collection. The questionnaire survey was distributed to the respondents in Penang. The interviews will be conducted through phone call and google forms and targeted on construction people in consultants and contractors’ companies. In summary, findings of this research may overcome the talent drought of skilled workers issues in construction industry.
