Abstract

The incident of Gombak unfinished building collapse occurred in year 2019 has again highlighted the significant of improving safety in Malaysian construction industry. Also, it was found that Malaysia’s fatal accident rate (FAR) has deteriorated by 20 per cent since the turn of the century yet there was evidence of disappointing results on preventing or even remedial action taken on such issue. Thus, present study is carried out to explore on such issue by determining the most frequent happened construction accident types, major causes contributed to high construction fatality rates and also identifying the current performance of safety intervention practice in Malaysia. Random sampling technique had been adopted in present study in order to select target respondents among Grade 4, Grade 5, Grade 6 and Grade 7 contractors in Gombak, Selangor. Throughout the research, it could be concluded that the most frequent happened construction accidents were fall-related accidents, followed by electrical incidents, and exposure to or suffocation of harmful substances, struck by injuries, caught in operating equipment or machines, earth or structure collapse and vehicle accidents. Also, it was highlighted that the major causes of high construction fatality in Malaysian construction industry is inappropriate usage of personal safety equipment, inadequate of safety training and unsafe equipment which resulted by poor maintenance and defective tools. While for negative consequences which most impacted by construction accident, it is found out that the highest three (3) rank will be physical suffering of the victim, victim’s family burden and delay of construction works. In addition, the findings also concluded that the most significant preventives to be improved by Malaysian construction industry is to involve more site inspection, enhance good housekeeping habits and ensure fully utilize of personal protective equipment. Also, all results obtained was analysed by Cronbach's Alpha reliability test and thus it showed that findings in present study is deemed valid and solid.
