Abstract

In Malaysia, the construction sector contributes in a great proportions of economy aspect, however, this achievement leads to construction sector has the highest accident death rate as compared to other sectors. Most of the construction work is mainly sublet to subcontractors. Therefore, safety issue in construction industry I mostly influenced by the poor safety performances of the subcontractors since most of the construction works are subcontracted to them. Thus, the aim of this research is to investigate the impacts on the safety performances of subcontractors towards the safety level of Malaysian construction industry. The objectives of this research are to determine the factors impact and enhance the safety performances of the subcontractors and compare the perceptions of main contractors and subcontractors on factors impact and enhance safety performances of subcontractors in Malaysian construction industry. Quantitative research method was adopted by distributing developed questionnaire surveys to Grade 5 – 7 main contractors and subcontractors that located in Klang Valley area. A total number of 70 data were received from the respondents. The top 3 factors impact safety performances of subcontractors in construction industry are failure to use personal protective equipment, lack of worker training and lack of management commitment whereas the least important factor is lack of job experience. Besides, the top 3 factors enhance safety performances of subcontractors are to provide personal protective equipment, health and safety plan preparation and provide safety and health training whereas the least important factors are improving working environment. Furthermore, it was found that there are different in factors enhance safety performances of subcontractors between main contractors and subcontractors which are provide personal protective equipment and improvement of communication. This research helps the subcontractors and other construction personnel to have a better understanding on what should be aware and improve of in a construction project so that construction accidents rate in construction site can be reduced, prevented and controlled. Therefore, the safety and health of the construction workers can be guaranteed when they are working on the construction site.
