Abstract
Building Information Modelling (BIM) is an innovative approach that can improve construction performance at the national level. However, the rate of BIM adoption is very low in Malaysia, especially in the Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs), who are the backbone of the economy in Malaysia. As a result, most of the firms are still using the traditional building delivery method, which is less efficiency and productivity. The organisational readiness is a key driver to improve the BIM adoption in SMEs in Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) sector. Therefore, to tackle this problem, this research study is carried out to determine the current status of BIM adoption in SMEs, to assess the organisational readiness on BIM adoption in SMEs, and to identify the strategies to improve the BIM adoption in SMEs. The methodologies that are applied for this research are started with conducting a literature review to find out the relevant information based on previous findings for the three objectives of this study. This is followed by distributing the questionnaire forms to the architect, C&S engineer, MEP engineer, quantity surveyor, and contractor who own a firm under SMEs in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor. The collected data are then be analysed by using Cronbach’s Alpha Analysis, Descriptive Analysis, and Pearson Correlation Coefficient Analysis in Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) software. Based on the results obtained for the first objective, there are only 11% of SMEs are adopting BIM in their firm. This shows that the level of BIM adoption in SMEs is relatively low. While the results for the second objective show that the most readied criterion on BIM adoption in SMEs is the attitude of the workers, whereas the least readied criterion is the change strategy. Moreover, the overall results reveal that “people” is the most readied element on BIM adoption in SMEs, whereas the “process” is the least readied element. The results also show that “management” and “technology” have the strongest positive relationship. For the third objective, the findings show that the most agreed strategy for improving the BIM adoption in SMEs is the tax reduction and then followed by the education programme, whereas the least agreed strategy is the mandatory of setting up BIM department. Through this research, the government could understand the current situation of SMEs on BIM adoption in terms of their status and readiness, as well as the most significant strategies to increase the BIM adoption in SMEs. Hence, the government could establish a proper guideline to improve the readiness of SMEs, and to prepare a proper plan for the identified strategies to effectively facilitate the level of BIM adoption in SMEs. Furthermore, this research could also help the SMEs to assess their strength and weaknesses through understanding the readiness gap, and thus, the SMEs could improve their weaknesses and be wellprepared for the BIM adoption.
