Abstract

The greenery in Malaysia, especially in urban areas such as Kuala Lumpur, has been gradually decreases. The main factor is due to the urbanization. In order to solve the problem of greening reduction caused by urbanization, the application of rooftop greenery system is an effective method. The application of this system not only can reduce the negative effect caused by urbanization, but also can be used for aesthetic purpose to beautify the city. Besides, the application of rooftop greenery system can solve the limited land issue in urban areas as what it occupied is not the land but the rooftop of building. However, the use of rooftop greenery system in Malaysia is not widespread. In this research, there are three objectives involved, which include to determine the benefits of implementing rooftop greenery system, the obstacles faced in the implementation of this system in Malaysia, as well as to identify the maintenance criteria of the rooftop greenery system. These objectives will be achieved through the literature review and questionnaire survey. 150 sets of questionnaires generated using Google Form have been sent by email to the target respondents who are participants in the construction industry. After collecting the data, the analysis will be done by using Statistic Package for Social Science (SPSS) software. Both frequency statistics and descriptive statistics are used in this research. The overall findings allow the construction industry players and public to understand the benefits of implementing rooftop greenery system, the obstacles which obstruct the implementation and the maintenance criteria required by this system.
